Some Shots From the Summer

Summer here in the Hudson Valley has been pretty mild. We've had our predictable August wind drought, and that's coming to an end. We're starting to get days in the teens on a regular basis, which is pretty encouraging.

A few shots over the summer during the mild days, trying out the wideboard. Still haven't taken this bad boy out in planing weather.

I enjoy following your blog. Thanks and keep up the good work! I typically get my wind fix sailing at sandy hook NJ, but sometimes sail Liberty State Park behind the statue of liberty. Lots of rocks, so not my favorite place and can require tacks to get out. That said, it is near my place and I'm thinking of buying a Kona One (sweet borad!). Did u buy yours somewhat locally? That monster would be a hassle to ship. Thanks

Aaron,

Thanks for the compliment! I got the Kona from surfingsports.com, but I don't know if they're selling windsurfers anymore or just focusing on SUP boards. I don't think a Kona costs any more to ship than any other board, at least mine didn't.

Where do you launch to sail the Statue of Liberty? I'd love to sail the statue!

Cooee from down under! I just love your blog :-)
My favorite spots are Byron Bay (have you heard of it?), Trial Bay, and close to home, Crowdy Bay National Park.
I like a gentle rolling "longboard" wave with a sandy bottom.
I love the NP. When I setup the 'roos are quite inquisitive and always coming over to have a poke around. Often the dolphins are likewise when I get out in the water! I saw some awesome whales the other day!!
Looks like you and I are about the same level of experience with our Kona boards. I am quite proficient with uphaul in hugely variable conditions, and wondering if I really need to learn to waterstart? My windsurfing experience is about 99% surf, but avoid the big wave days, but not scared to go out in the big winds now like I used to be. Another thing I don't do is use the footstraps. My style, though probably not "correct" is a crossover between surfing and windsurfing. I sail onto a wave, then "surf" the wave like a longboard. I feel that straps would be too limiting. I don't use the daggerboard any more, but I do use the straps a lot with a seat harness. It works for me and I am having fun, so what does it matter? It is also a lot of fun planing from way out back on line after line of waves. Although I keep well clear of them, it probably causes a bit of jealousy within the ranks of surfers waiting for the occasional "big one."
I am really happy with my Kona, and get out every chance I can. It is great food for the soul!

We have some of the same August conditions in West Central Florida. I guess one this is constant, there's no gust in August.

Gidget,

Your sailing issues are definitely the same as mine. that said, I'm totally jealous of your sailing sites. You have kangaroos, dolphins, and whales as local scenery and I have vultures, nuclear power plants and turbid water. Your comments inspire me.

Aaron, I did see your NJ posting. Man, this area can be rough. Pollution isn't so much of an issue north of the city (discounting the occasional leak from Indian Point), but launch sites can be treacherous.
