Light Winds Are Fun

The point about light-wind sailing is not to have a vein-popping, thrill-seeking, adrenaline-pumping time. The point about light-wind sailing is to get your butt out on the water, no matter what the conditions, and have a good time. I got out on Sunday off Peekskill while the carnival was going full-force, and had a blast. I sailed back and forth on my light-wind rig. Occasionally the winds would pick up, but usually not. A more experienced sailor would probably have been able to get out onto a plane in those moments, but not me.

That said, it was a gorgeous day to be on the water. The sun was shimmering on the water. Boats were everywhere. It was a privilege to be on my board on a day like that. The river was about 65ºF, so I even sailed without a wetsuit.

The wind died down as I was going in to almost nothing. I was able to limp in, but a sailboat nearby had to suffer the indignity of a tow.

* I'm having a little trouble with some of the paragraph returns in this new HTML editor. apparently Apple Safari puts extra characters into the text editor, which is what's creating the extra-large breaks between paragraphs. This doesn't happen in Firefox, but the image importing feature doesn't work well in Firefox. (For some reason, Firefox is very persnickety about displaying large amounts of images.) I'm hoping to not have to switch between browsers just to make blog entries.
